2016 Bicycle Friendly University Winners

The League of American Bicyclists has announced their Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) winners for 2016. Congratulations to six Bicycle Friendly Universities in Illinois: Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern University, School of Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago all received Silver awards while both Southern Illinois and University of Illinois, Springfield received Bronze awards.

The Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) program recognizes institutions of higher education for promoting and providing a more bikeable campus for students, staff and visitors. The program evaluates applicants’ efforts to promote bicycling in five primary areas: engineering, encouragement, education, enforcement and evaluation/planning, known as the Five E’s. Each successful program has a mixture of determined advocates & visionary leaders, each doing their parts to build a Bicycle Friendly University. Most of the recognized universities use Ride Illinois’ BikeSafetyQuiz.com to educate and promote safe cycling skills on their campus. Ride Illinois has also partnered with the annual Bike2Campus campaign that promotes bicycling and safety education among Chicago area colleges and universities.
