As part of our ongoing advocacy work, Ride Illinois has recently reviewed 218 upcoming Illinois Department of Transportation District 1 resurfacing projects throughout the northeastern Illinois counties of Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, and Will. We have done similar reviews of future state-jurisdiction roadwork for four other IDOT districts, with another four to go over the coming year.
For all the District 1 projects, we analyzed current bicycle (and pedestrian) conditions. For most, we developed recommendations to improve conditions, keeping in mind the small scope and budget of resurfacing projects. Our list of suggestions was sent to IDOT, along with a letter detailing improvement types.
We need your help to reinforce our request to IDOT District 1, and let them know that local residents would like to see bike-friendly roads in their communities. If you live in District 1, please take a moment to sign our petition below, asking IDOT to implement our recommendations.
I strongly support Ride Illinois’ recommendations to improve bicycling conditions in upcoming IDOT District 1 road resurfacing projects. Including these reasonable bicycle accommodations in the designs will not only make our roads bicycle friendly, they will also make our roads safer for all road users. As a resident and cyclist, I urge you to adopt Ride Illinois’ recommendations.
