New Bike Safety Quiz Program for Schools, Drivers Ed, & Police

Ride Illinois was recently awarded a $55,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Injury Prevention Program to promote bicycle safety education in schools, driver education programs, and police departments. The grant will be used to incentivize schools and police departments to routinely use BikeSafetyQuiz.com in their classroom curricula, officer trainings, and community enforcement campaigns.

BikeSafetyQuiz.com is an easy-to-use resource that includes IL Secretary of State approved content and provides both cyclists and motorists with in-depth instruction on common car-bike crash causes and relevant state laws. Instructors are provided with a classroom code and can easily assign and monitor their students’ progress on the quiz.

In January, hundreds of informational letters were mailed to elementary schools, high schools and drivers education programs, and police departments throughout the state inviting them to participate in our program. Accepted program participants that successfully implement the quiz and use it in their classrooms will be eligible to receive cash awards by September 2018. Our goal is to engage at least:

  • 50 high schools and driver education programs and award up to $250 each
  • 40 elementary schools and award up to $250 each
  • 25 police departments and award up to $300 each

Many applications have already been received, and the vast majority will be accepted into the program. The current list of applicants can be viewed here.

However, there’s still time to apply or urge your local driver ed program, elementary school, or police department to apply. To apply for the Bike Safety Quiz program or ask your local schools or police departments to participate, please download and share our letters linked below. Contact us if you have questions about the program.

Some teachers have already begun using BikeSafetyQuiz.com in their classrooms. Here’s what they have to say:

“Our classes did [the quiz] on 1/23/2018. They loved it and learned a lot of new rules they were not aware of. Was great to do!!”  -Vince DeLuca, Vernon Hills High School

“My class completed the quiz for bicycle safety and I know that they were quite surprised by their lack of knowledge. I will be using the safety quiz with my next class which begins on February 26th. This information is quite helpful while incorporating it into my curriculum.”  -Clifford Wagner, Marist High School

“Thanks to whoever came up with this idea of getting this quiz to high school aged kids. I’m an avid cyclist and mountain biker and it’s good to know there’s a group like Ride Illinois to teach people about bike safety!!”  – Greg Botica, Hillcrest High School
