Advocate for bicyclist safety when you drive! The Share the Road license plates deliver a key message and raise money for Ride Illinois’ education programs via the state’s Share the Road Fund. Most of the incremental fee for these state-approved specialty license plates fund our education offerings – BikeSafetyQuiz, useful materials and resources, and the Ride Illinois Safely program.
To learn more or to order these specialty plates for your car, van, or light truck, visit the Secretary of State’s Share the Road license plates page or the Pick-a-Plate page.
Note: personalized or vanity plates take longer to ship than random number plates, since the former have to be individually made.
Share the Road Plates Counts
The chart below tracks the number of Share the Road license plates on Illinois vehicles since February 2021. The counts been declining which has reduced our level of funding for education. We’re hoping to reverse that trend with additional outreach to the public. Those that can afford an extra $17 fee (initial registration) or $20 fee (renewals) per year are invited to purchase the specialty plates for their vehicle(s).
Get your Share the Road license plates and encourage friends and family to get them too! Of course, we understand the additional fee is a burden that not everyone can afford.
