Legislative Scorecard

Safer biking doesn't just happen: it's the result of ongoing advocacy, relationship-building, and showing up when and where decisions are made. Ride Illinois has been working alongside lawmakers, partners, and communities across the state to push for legislation and policies that protect people who ride bicycles, in communities of all sizes across Illinois.

Our Legislative Scorecard covers all bike-related bills from 2023 through 2026, including a summary of this year's spring legislative session and a recap of the most important legislation from the past several years. The scorecard provides a list of relevant bills, concise summaries, and a clear record of how each state legislator voted.

We do this work because we love it - and because we love this community. Every conversation with a legislator, every bill tracked, every vote recorded is in service of the people who ride bikes in Illinois, whether that's commuting to work, riding with your kids on a Saturday morning, or getting fresh air on a trail. Ride Illinois developed this resource to help make sense of the behind-the-scenes efforts that shape bicycling policy in the state. Every policy win, and every shortfall, matters - and every one of them affects you.

We hope this Scorecard informs and inspires more Illinois residents to get involved and speak up for safer streets statewide. Knowing how legislators vote on relevant bills is a key step toward holding them accountable and building a more bike-friendly Illinois.

Contact Your Legislators

If biking matters to you, don't stay quiet about it - your legislators need to hear from the people who actually ride. A quick call, letter, or visit to their district office can carry real weight, especially when a bill is on the table. Lawmakers respond to constituents who show up, so if biking is part of your life, let them know it's part of your vote too. To help you make the case, we have plenty of educational materials you can use yourself or send directly to your representatives. Our materials request are free, easy, and made to empower you.
