Letter to IDOT and Governor: Focus on VRU Safety

Ride Illinois, along with nearly two dozen other organizations, recently sent an important letter to IDOT Secretary of Transportation Omer Osman and Governor J.B. Pritzker. Collectively, we demand that funds the state will receive from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) be used in a meaningful way to improve safety and accessibility for everyone, especially vulnerable road users (VRUs). Ride Illinois was proud to initiate this effort and take the opportunity to remind IDOT and the governor of the inadequacies of Illinois’ present-day transportation system.

Illinois and IDOT must invest in safe places to walk and bike...
...and spend less on highway expansion and the status quo.

The Four Asks

Our letter addresses four sections of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that are specifically relevant to Vulnerable Road Users (VRU). These topics are intended to be a starting point in the development of a transportation system that truly works for residents of Illinois.

  • Surface Transportation Block Grant/Transportation Alternatives Set Aside (Sec. 11109)
  • Highway Safety Improvement Program (Sec. 11111)
  • Safe Routes to School (Sec. 11119)
  • Increasing Safe and Accessible Transportation Options. Sec. (11206)

To learn specifics about each of the topics listed above, please read the LETTER that was sent to IDOT and the governor.

Awaiting a Response
