Bicycle-Friendly Driver Course

This purpose of this free, interactive course and discussion is to share information with drivers of motor vehicles on how they can drive safely near people riding bikes.

In recent years, the number of people injured and killed on Illinois roads has increased significantly. This Bicycle-Friendly Driver course is one way that Ride Illinois is working to reduce crashes and fatalities for all roadway users.

7/20/23 Update: Ride Illinois’ Education committee will be discussing ways to improve the course and reach a wide audience. For those reasons, we’ve chosen to postpone any future Bicycle Friendly Driver courses.

More About the Course

All roadway users, regardless of the mode of travel, deserve to arrive at their destination safely! Bicycle-friendly drivers are more careful, patient, and aware of the pedestrians, bicyclists, and other motorists with whom they share the road. Taking this intentional approach to driving increases safety for all road users.

During this free, action-packed course, we will focus on the Illinois Rules of the Road, what it means to share the road, bike infrastructure, causes of common crashes, the concept of “taking the lane”, what Ride Illinois teaches cyclists, and more!
