The Starved Rock Cycling Association (SRCA), in memory of a dear club member Margaret Virginia Williams, donated $1,950 to be used by Ride Illinois for bicycle education programs in the state of Illinois. Starved Rock Cycling Association admired Margaret’s energetic, happy, and thoughtful support of the club and the cycling community.
Margaret began riding with SRCA on a hybrid bicycle, and soon upgraded to a road bike. She always volunteered to support SRCA’s mission, and continuously asked how she could help. She assisted with bike safety classes with kids and helped with grocery shopping for our annual Pumpkin Pie fundraising ride. She also oversaw a rest stop for the event.
She improved her riding skills by mentoring new riders. Margaret was always suggesting a social ride for the club to do – she loved stopping for lunch or breakfast. She always was encouraging safe riding and wanted folks to just get out and ride. As one SRCA member stated on one of her last rides with the club, “Margaret was handing out cucumbers from her garden to everyone on the ride.”
Margaret’s laugh and sense of humor was contagious. Her voice will be missed throughout the SRCA peloton calling out “car back,” but she will not be forgotten.
