Schools Receive Bike Safety Quiz Awards

The League of Illinois Bicyclists is honored to announce the winning high schools for the 2014-2015 Bikesafetyquiz.com Award! At May’s Illinois High School & College Driver Education Association’s (IHSCDEA) state conference, LIB’s Ed Barsotti recognized five high schools as being top 2014-2015 participants in using the “Motorist Quiz” of www.bikesafetyquiz.com to teach students about safe car-bike interactions and relevant state laws.

The 2014-2015 recipients of the Bikesafetyquiz.com awards are Charleston High School; Edwards County High School, in Albion; Grant Community High School, in Fox Lake; and Rockford Auburn High School and Rockford East High School (shared award). The schools received $400 and certificate.

“BikeSafetyQuiz was a fantastic way for me to begin a conversation with my students about the multitude of objects, other than vehicles, that they will encounter on the roadway,” said Joe Rivers, drivers education instructor at Edwards County High School. “I used this as a foundation for beginning a lesson on bicyclists, and was able to use it as a transition to cover so many other things. The program gives the educator a great deal of information in a user friendly format.”

This is the second annual awards from LIB to state high schools. Monetary awards will be raffled annually to Illinois high schools and private driving schools heavily using the Motorist Quiz in their driver education programs. Funds for the awards will be provided through revenue of the state “Share the Road” specialty license plate. LIB has been presenting at regional IHSCDEA workshops and will continue to encourage and recognize public and private drivers’ education programs utilizing our bike safety motorist lesson.

The motorist quiz at www.bikesafetyquiz.com consists of 25 Secretary of State-approved multiple-choice questions covering safety techniques and bicycle laws. The learning comes from short explanations tailored to a student’s right or wrong response. LIB created this tool to help close a public educational gap that increases in priority as more people bike for transportation and recreation.

“We have used your quiz both semesters of this school year. It is a great resource that the students benefit from,” said Grant Community High School drivers’ education teachers Brian Kibitlewski when learning the school received the award.

To increase awareness for bicycle safety and incentivize all Illinois residents to use BikeSafetyQuiz.com, LIB has been awarding cash participation prizes to both elementary and high schools as well as adult individuals throughout the state since last year. More than 30,000 individuals have visited the site to date. The participation prizes are funded by proceeds from Illinois’ Share the Road specialty license plates sales.
