Advocating for Bike-Friendly Roads in Southern IL

As part of our ongoing advocacy work, Ride Illinois continues to speak up for people who ride bicycles when IDOT designs state road projects.

We will soon be sending IDOT District 9 (southern Illinois) design suggestions for 12 priority projects over the next 5 years. Specific requests include paved shoulders, less restrictive rumble strips, off-road sidepaths, road striping, and green light triggering. See the list below for more details. Please feel free to send us your feedback at info@rideillinois.org. We welcome your feedback!

The 12 projects in IDOT District 9:

US51-60-62 bridge in Cairo – Ohio River bridge replacement

I-57 Ina Interchange – bridge replacement

IL37 from Bonnie to Franklin County – resurfacing with new paved shoulders

IL146 on east side of Vienna – widening with continuous left-turn lane

IL149 in Murphysboro – resurfacing project

North 14th St in Murphysboro – resurfacing project

IL13 on east side of Marion – resurfacing project

IL13-127 from Pinckneyville to Jackson County – resurfacing project

IL154 from Pinckneyville to US51 – resurfacing project

IL154 from Sesser to I-57 – resurfacing project

US45 in Metropolis – resurfacing project

IL148 from Zeigler to Williamson County – resurfacing project

Ride Illinois is committed to helping communities around the state use road project opportunities like these to improve their bicycling conditions, and have already reviewed plans for 7 of the 9 IDOT districts. We’re working closely with state and local agencies to “get it right” at the early stages, and speaking up for bicyclists about locations that need to be fixed.
