Bikesafetyquiz.com is a first-of-its-kind resource developed by Ride Illinois that teaches kids, adults, and motorists how to share the road safely. The interactive quizzes cover safety techniques and relevant state laws using images and short explanations for each answer. The “test” is the teaching tool!
There are versions for three different audiences: adult cyclists, motorists/drivers ed students, and fourth/fifth grade children. Each version has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. In response to earning her Gold Level Certificate, former Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon explained: “I have been a driver for a long time; I have been a biker even longer. Even with all of that experience, taking the quiz was a good reminder and a good challenge to some things I thought I knew!”
Ride Illinois works to increase safe interactions– and reduce resentment – between people on bikes and in cars. There are serious public education gaps on bicycling safely and on driving in the presence of bikes. In-depth courses about cycling are limited in reach given the time and resources needed to participate. By taking a “Some (info) to Lots (of people)” approach, the quiz is helping mainstream basic bike safety information. Since June of 2013, more than 75,000 people have participated.
The quiz is not just for individuals wishing to test and grow their knowledge. Schools, after-school programs, scouts, driver’s education instructors, and other institutions can administer it for groups of people. Cities and police departments can also use the quiz for public education and constructive enforcement.
Partnerships are critical to spreading the reach of the Bike Safety Quiz. For example, Chicago’s bike share program Divvy offers a free 13th month for annual members who complete the quiz.
We continue to broaden our reach via partnerships with various audiences including those listed below. If you’d like to receive more information or promotional materials to support the use of the quiz for your group, please contact us!
Ride Illinois can help others customize the Bike Safety Quiz for their own states and even municipalities. The Drupal-based site can be replicated with a new URL. Questions and illustrations can be added, deleted, or edited from the current default content.
There is a one-time software architecture licensing fee, plus on-going site hosting and maintenance by the same software firm, Promet Solutions in Chicago. Please contact us if interested.
